20 Ways to Celebrate Veterans Day Around DC

There are many ways to honor those who have served in the U.S. military this Veterans Day, including: Wreath laying, concerts, family gatherings and more. Unless otherwise stated, all events are free and will take place on Monday, November 11th.

Wreath laying and ceremonies


National World War II Memorial

1750 Independence Ave., SW

This 9am Ceremony, is operated by the Friends of the National World War II Memorial Honor 16 million World War II veterans with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Freedom Wall. They will also livestream the event Facebook.

Arlington National Cemetery

1 Memorial Dr., Arlington

Arlington National Cemetery National Veterans Day Commemoration will include performances by the United States Marine Band and the US Navy Band Sea Chanters, who will have a prelude at 10:30 a.m. in the amphitheater. Members of various military branches will be in attendance, and there will be a parade with colors from veterans organizations. Participation in this year’s wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is limited to official participants.

First World War Memorial

1493 Pennsylvania Ave., NW

The Doughboy Foundation will use the annual Peace Bells to commemorate the end of World War I and the 116,516 Americans who gave their lives for the cause Wreath laying. They will ring the national World War I brass bell 21 times and play trumpets Aux Morts, Last Post and Taps. You can attend in person or in person online via live stream at 11 a.m.

Marine memorial

701 Pennsylvania Ave., NW

A Wreath laying honoring Marine veterans will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. You can also watch the ceremony on-line.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

5 Henry Bacon Dr., NW

This ceremony at 1 p.m. marks the 40th anniversary of the “Three Soldiers” statue.and the 20th anniversary of the “In Memory” plaque. It is a tribute to the men and women who served in Vietnam and later died as a result of the war.

Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism During World War II

Intersection of New Jersey Ave. and Louisiana Ave. and D St., NW

Japanese-Americans who have served in the military are the focus of this ceremony Starts at 2 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Cpl. Norio Uyematsu, a Korean War veteran. You can follow a live stream of the event here Facebook.

Military Wives Memorial

Memorial Ave and Schley Dr., Arlington

This ceremony The honoring of military women will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Military Women’s Memorial, located at the ceremonial entrance to Arlington National Cemetery. Hear formal military honors and remarks from current and former servicewomen. Register for the free event here.

Korean War Veterans Memorial

900 Ohio Dr., SW

Join the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation Ceremony and wreath handover from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. If you are a veteran, the foundation requires that you wear your uniform.

Mount Vernon

3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy., Mount Vernon

This day-long event will take place on the grounds of George Washington’s estate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities include a floral tribute to the military, a “Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution” ceremony, and music and history-related activities such as a question-and-answer session with Mount Vernon resident Fifer. Performers include the Harmony Heritage Singers, the United States Army Chorus, the United States Air Force Strings and more. Free tickets are available to all current and former military personnel.

National Museum of the American Indian

Fourth St. and Independence Ave., SW

All this day long Event is dedicated to the heritage of Native American military personnel will include conversations with veterans like the author Teresa Lynch-Chrapkiwicz and Mental Health Counselor Shannon E. Ayres. The day ends at the National Native American Veterans Memorial with a Celebration of the Colors performed by Native Americans National Capital Region Native American Color Guardand a wreath laying ceremony. National Cathedral

There will be an event at the National Cathedral on Saturday, November 9th at 4 p.m concert with the United States Marine Chamber Orchestra and singers from all military branches.

Navy Band Woodwind Quintet

Southwest Neighborhood Library, 900 Wesley Pl., SW

On Saturday, November 9th, the US Navy Band Woodwind Quintet will perform from 2 to 3 p.m carry out at the Southwest Neighborhood Library.

US Navy Band

Martin Luther King Jr. Library, 901 G St., NW

Concerts will be held in the MLK Library New Books Room from 1 to 4 p.m. The set includes performances by the Cruisers – the vocal ensemble of the US Navy Band – and the 12-piece brass ensemble.

National Museum of American Jewish Military History

1811 R St., NW

Help create care packages for hospitalized veterans between noon and 4 p.m. You can donate toiletries, socks, games, books and other items in new condition, but you don’t have to bring anything with you – you can also stop by to make cards and write thank you notes. The museum shows silent films from World War I while participants work.

National Archives

William G. McGovern Theater, 701 Constitution Ave., NW

On Wednesday, November 13, Friends of the National World War II Memorial and the National Archives are hosting a Book signing and discussion with Frank Cohn And Harry MillerVeterans of the Battle of the Bulge of World War II. The moderator will be a journalist and author Alex Kershawwho wrote The Longest Winter: The Battle of the Bulge and the Epic Story of World War II’s Most Decorated Platoon. The free event starts at 6:30 p.m. and you can register here.

Weekend events


Veterans Day parade

Constitution Ave., NW, between Seventh and 17th St.

The annual Veterans Day Parade, which begins on Seventh Street and ends at 17th Street, will take place on Sunday, November 10th from noon to 3 p.m Historical programsSeveral bands and choirs from all over the country will take part in the procession.

National port

165 Waterfront St., National Harbor

Events at National Harbor include a party at Bobby McKey’s on Friday, November 8, with free admission and 20 percent off all food and drinks; an F-16 overflight program orn Saturday, November 9th; and a concert by the United States Air Force Band District Brass Sunday, November 10th.

DC War Memorial

1100 Ohio Dr., SW

The DC Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs will do this hold a ceremony on Sunday, November 10, from 3 to 4 p.m.

Veterans Day 5K

4100 Monument Corner Dr., Fairfax

On Sunday, November 10th, DC Front Runners is hosting its Veterans Day 5K Run at Fairfax Corner. Entrance fees range from $35 to $45.

Library of Congress Family Day

Thomas Jefferson Building, Great Hall, 10 First St., SE

The Library of Congress will host one Family day on Saturday, November 9th. From 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., children and adults can explore activities related to World War I and World War II. The event is free, but you will need a pass to enter the Jefferson Building. Register for a timed entry pass Here.
