Watch Lainey Wilson’s “4x4xU” performance on “Fallon”

Lainey Wilson stopped by The Tonight Show to present their song “4x4xU” from their current LP WhirlwindThe country singer performed the song on guitar and vocals alongside her live band and backing singers, who sat with Wilson on adjacent couches on the late-night show’s stage.

Wilson released “4x4xU” in July as the third single from WhirlwindThe soulful mid-tempo ballad tells the story of a quickly budding highway romance that takes place in the cab of a pickup truck: “Your hands 10 and 2 on my heart,” she sings.

“This song is about finding someone who will give you the comfort and peace of home anywhere in the world as long as you’re by their side,” said Wilson, who confirmed that she believes the collaborative songwriting effort between Wilson, Jon Decious and Aaron Raitiere “could be my biggest song yet.”

Whirlwindwhich was released in August, was Wilson’s follow-up to the 2022 Flared Pants Countrywhich won Country Album of the Year at the Grammys. Wilson recently performed several songs from the LP on NPR’s Small desk concert Series.

During the performance, Wilson expressed her gratitude for the performance of NPR’s Small desksaid: “This has always been on our wish list. She added: “We decided to call the album that Whirlwind because that’s how my life has been since we released my last record Bell Bottom Land, I’m just trying to keep one foot on the ground. I feel like my life has changed, but I feel like that’s not the case.”

To The Tonight ShowWilson also sat down with host Jimmy Fallon to talk about the album, as well as her experience meeting and performing for Miley Cyrus for the first time. Wilson recalled imitating Hannah Montana as a teenager and confirmed that she threw “three or four birthday parties a weekend.”

“It was just cool to be able to shake her hand and tell her how much Hannah Montana means to me,” Wilson said of meeting Cyrus, explaining that playing the fictional character gave her the opportunity to find out “if this is actually something I want to do.”
