Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell took the blame for his team’s embarrassment on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Bucs at Ford Field in Week 2 of the NFL season. The play ultimately ended up being a key factor in the Lions’ 20-16 loss.

The Lions lost three points when the field goal unit ran down the field when Jared Goff and the offense ran the ball down the ground at the Buccaneers’ 9-yard line on third down with a few seconds left. The Lions were penalized with too many men on the field and the clock ran out after a 10-second run-off.

“Half the team ran onto the field,” Fox analyst Daryl Johnston said on the show.

The Lions went into halftime trailing the Buccaneers 13-6, with up-and-coming kicker Jake Bates helping the offense with two field goals. They had a chance at a 26-yard field goal for Bates.

Campbell was visibly frustrated on the sidelines after the misunderstanding and was interviewed by Fox sideline reporter Laura Okmin after his appearance for the second half.

“Listen, I’m 100% on the side of the head coach,” Campbell began when asked what happened. “I totally screwed up my team. This is mine, we’re playing on the clock, look at it, it’s not a ‘Hurricane’ (call). I made a decision I shouldn’t have made and our team is going to have to deal with it. That’s the bottom line.”

The Lions opened the second half by again driving deep into Bucs territory, but had to settle for Bates’ third field goal.

The Lions took their first lead, 16-13, late in the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by David Montgomery, but Baker Mayfield quickly responded with an 11-yard run to give the Bucs a 20-16 lead with 34 seconds left in the third quarter.
