The hugely popular FX series “Shōgun” dominated the Emmys on Sunday night, winning 18 of the 25 nominations and becoming the first non-English language television show to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series.

And on the red carpet outside LA’s Peacock Theater, the show’s cast and crew (and their significant others) showcased some of the night’s most striking fashion trends.

The very best of them was Anna Sawai (pictured above), who appeared in a stunning custom red Vera Wang dress and became the first person of Asian descent to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

She paired her silk faille mermaid dress, which Wang’s eponymous label says has an “architectural” neckline, with jewelry from Cartier, for which Sawai is now a brand ambassador.

The look was inspired by Sawai’s character Lady Mariko and was designed by celebrity stylist Karla Welch. “We loved how modern they looked and that they had a kind of shogun feel,” Welch told Vogue before the awards ceremony, referring to the actress’s Cartier ring, earrings and platinum and onyx rings. “The whole look was clean, modern, princess.”

Veteran actor Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays the lead character Lord Yoshii Toranaga, looked dapper in a navy wool tuxedo with silk lapels by Dior Men. Although less daring than some of the other menswear pieces of the evening, his choice of a matching navy shirt and embroidered tie added a fresh touch to a classically tailored look.

Otherwise, Tadanobu Asano opted for a more conventional (but no less elegant) evening gown. But it was his wife, actress Kurumi Nakata, who made a splash on the red carpet in a kimono with gold details worthy of a historic Japanese painting.

In addition to the main cast, actress Moeka Hoshi, who plays a recurring role in the series, also stunned in a look by Miu Miu, the sister brand of luxury giant Prada. Her embellished chiffon dress was brought to life with black feathers and crystal details.

Yuko Miyamoto, who plays a teahouse lady, looked elegant in a beautifully embroidered one-shoulder dress with a Japanese print motif. And Yuka Kouri, whose character is a courtesan, shone in a long-sleeved dress that opened at one side to reveal a glimpse of her upper body.

The zipper on Yuka Kouri's dress gave the impression of a neckline.

And it wasn’t just the “Shōgun” actors.

Husband and wife Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, creators of the series that adapted James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name for the screen, also attended, wearing a Christopher John Rogers evening gown and a classic tuxedo, respectively.

With “Shōgun” expected to be nominated for more awards season—the Golden Globe Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards are still to come—it’s safe to assume that many of these names will become red carpet staples in the coming months.
