‘Wordle’ No. 1,186 Tips, hints and answers for the game on Tuesday, September 17

Almost three years after its release, Wordle still has an incredibly loyal fan base.

The inventor of the popular puzzle was Josh Wardle, a Welsh-born software developer from New York City. He perfected Wordle during the COVID-19 lockdowns before opening to the public in October 2021.

After its public debut, the number of users of the word game exploded from 90 on November 1, 2021, to 300,000 on January 2, 2022, according to figures from Statista. The New York Times bought it for an undisclosed seven-figure sum and soon it became the publication’s most popular game.

For the uninitiated: Wordle Players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word. Gray tiles behind each letter indicate that it does not appear in the word at all; yellow means that the letter is there but in the wrong place; while green tells players that the letter is in the word and in the right place.

Today, Wordle remains the paper’s most popular word game. What is the reason for its continued success? Wardle puts it down to the game’s five-letter word, six-guess format.

“There’s a reason each word is five letters long and you have six attempts to guess it. This may seem arbitrary, but with the prototype version I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of attempts players were allowed,” he said. Newsweek in January 2022.

“Through this refinement process, I’ve found that five letters and six attempts is the ideal average. It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and thought-provoking, but most people still manage to solve it. So there’s a real sense of achievement.”
