Eric Roberts publicly apologizes to his sister Julia Roberts

Eric Roberts’ debut on “Dancing with the Stars” on Tuesday night offered a rare glimpse into the world of one of the industry’s most renowned actors.

The “Runaway Train” star’s latest television appearance seemed to be another step for Roberts to right past wrongs, many of which he describes in detail in his new memoir, “Runaway Train: Or the Story of My Life So Far.”

In the book, Roberts offered his sister, Oscar-winning actress Julia Roberts, a “public apology” for words once spoken about their famous family.

The “Righteous Gemstones” star made headlines in 2018 when he took responsibility for his sister’s award-winning career in addition to his daughter Emma Roberts’ status in Hollywood.

“Without me, there would be no Julia Roberts and no Emma Roberts as celebrities, as actresses, and I am very proud of that,” he told Vanity Fair.

Almost six years later, Roberts retracted that statement and offered the “Pretty Woman” star a peace offering.

“I hope Julia will accept this public apology. That was a stupid statement,” he wrote, according to People Magazine..

His history in film and television roles is almost as extensive as his reputation when the cameras weren’t rolling.

In 1981, Roberts was involved in a car accident and was in a coma for three days. The accident, along with years of drug abuse as a cocaine addict, took a toll on his body and mind and also affected his personal relationships.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder because it was dangerous to be around me,” he admits in the book about his bond with his sisters. “Lisa and Julia needed love and protection – instead they became afraid and insecure.”

“The worst consequence of my drug use was, of course, that I lost Emma.”

Roberts was at the depths of his addiction when he claimed that Julia was supporting his ex, Kim Cunningham, in a custody battle over Emma.

“I imagine that I will remain Julia’s brother and Emma Roberts’s father for the rest of my life,” he wrote. “I want to make amends by stepping aside with pride and dignity. That is one of the reasons I wrote the book.”
