MLB results: Braves 5, Mets 1 – Lifeless Mets lose decisive opening game of the series

The Mets began their three-game series in Atlanta with a complete washout, losing 5-1 and never really looking like they had a chance to win. This isn’t ideal, of course, as they needed two wins in three games to start the series to secure a playoff spot by taking a three-game lead and the tiebreaker against the Braves.

Luis Severino was not good, allowing four runs in four innings. The Mets bullpen did well for the most part after that, allowing just one run in four innings, but it didn’t matter much.

The Mets’ offense was lifeless all night, with Spencer Schwellenbach holding it back until Mark Vientos hit a solo home run in the seventh inning. It was no surprise that the Mets also failed to score against the Braves’ bullpen.

Given the weather forecast for Atlanta, it’s highly unlikely the series will be played in full over the next two days. That could be a good thing for the Mets, as their best chance at making the playoffs could be to beat the Diamondbacks — against whom they already have the tiebreaker — for one of the wild card spots.
