Stats highlights from an exciting day of Test cricket in Kanpur as India forced the Test after two washed-out days of play.

1 India became the first team to reach 50 runs in the first three overs in an innings – in this case just 2.6 overs – surpassing England’s previous record of 4.2 overs set by the team in the recent Test series against West Indies had set up twice. India also broke the record for fastest team with 100 (10.1 overs), 150 (18.2 overs), 200 (24.2 overs) and 250 (30.1 overs) by one team.

96 sixes The maximum deliveries scored by India in 2024 are the most maximum deliveries by a team in a calendar year in Test cricket, surpassing 89 by England in 2022, while India are third with 87 sixes in 2021. India may have the second innings of the ongoing Kanpur Test and another seven will follow in the memory of the year to add to the tally.

8.22 India’s strike rate in their batting innings – the highest ever achieved by a team in an innings in which they scored 200 or more. The previous high was Australia’s 7.53 (241/2 for defeat in 32 overs) against Pakistan in Sydney in 2017, while the highest ever achieved by a team in their first innings was South Africa’s 6.80 (340/3 for defeat in 50 overs) against Zimbabwe in Cape Town in 2005.

14.34 Partnership scoring rate in the opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal (55 runs off 23 balls) – the highest ever in a 50+ stand in Tests where wicket fall data is available. A few months ago they topped 11.86 between Ben Stokes and Ben Duckett against West Indies at Edgbaston when they scored an unbeaten 87 off 44 balls for the opening wicket.

2 This was the second time that two batters in the same innings (if recorded) reached 50 in 35 balls or less – Jaiswal in 31 balls and KL Rahul in 33 balls. The previous instance also belonged to India, last year against the West Indies in Port of Spain, with Rohit Sharma (35 balls) and Ishan Kishan (33 balls) being the protagonists. Jaiswal’s 31-ball performance is the second fastest performance by an Indian batsman on home soil after Rishabh Pant’s 26-ball half-time performance against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru in 2022.

437 runs The goals scored by both teams combined on the matchday are the second most in a matchday on Indian soil after 470 on the second matchday between India and Sri Lanka at Brabourne Stadium in 2009. 437 also happens to be the most on a matchday in a Test in Asia on the scheduled fourth day of the Test or thereafter. Additionally, 18 wickets fell in the day’s match, making the most wickets fell on a day in which a total of 400 or more runs were scored.

7 Ravindra Jadeja became the seventh Indian bowler to reach the milestone of 300 Test wickets for India. At 35 years and 299 days, Jadeja is the oldest among the seven at the time of reaching the milestone, while his 17,428 balls are the second fastest behind R Ashwin (15,636 balls).

74 tests Jadeja is the second fastest player to more than 3,000 runs and more than 300 wickets behind Ian Botham, who needed two fewer Tests. He is the 11th player overall and the third Indian after Kapil Dev and R Ashwin to achieve the double and of the 11 players, his batting-bowling average difference of 12.39 is bettered only by Imran Khan (14.88). .

12.00 Mominul Haque’s eight-innings average (96 runs) in India preceded his unbeaten average of 107 in the first innings – the lowest of any batter at the time of their first century on Indian soil (more than five innings). The previous lowest score was achieved by Ricky Ponting, who averaged 12.29 (172 runs in 14 innings) before scoring his first century on his third tour of India in 2008.
