Schenectady Police use new e-bikes for patrol | News

SCHENECTADY – The Schenectady Police Department has added four electric bicycles (e-bikes) to its fleet. Each of these bikes is equipped with electronic pedal assistance to help officers travel more efficiently, according to a recent press release.

While announcing the new vehicles that citizens will see on their patrols, the department also took the opportunity to announce the laws governing the operation of e-bikes and scooters in the City of Schenectady. The electric vehicles have different rules and regulations than regular bikes and scooters.

According to the DMV, electric scooters and bicycles have been allowed to operate on some of the state’s roads and highways since August 2, 2020. An electric scooter is described as “a type of device with handlebars, footboard or seat and an electric motor that can be propelled by the electric motor and/or human power.” E-bikes are described as “several classes of bicycles with an electric motor and operable pedals. An electric-assist bicycle does not qualify for registration as a motorcycle, restricted motorcycle, moped or ATV and does not have the same equipment.”

There are certain DMV guidelines for operating e-bikes and scooters on roads:

  • They can operate on highways with a speed limit of 30 mph or less.
  • Municipalities can further regulate the time, place and type of operation of the devices
  • They may not be operated on a sidewalk unless permitted by local law or ordinance.
