The Patriots have no update on Drake Maye, who remains in concussion protocol

Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said Monday there were no updates on the rookie quarterback’s health Drake Mayewho had to leave Sunday’s game against the Jets due to a head injury in the first half.

“Drake is in the NFL concussion protocol, so I’m not going to get too involved in that as far as Drake issues go,” Mayo said in a conference call.

“What I told the guys in the locker room last night was this next-man-up mentality. It doesn’t matter what position you play. You could be a defensive lineman, an offensive lineman, whatever. Or a quarterback we saw yesterday. Kudos to Jacoby (Brissett) because he was ready to go when we needed him.”

The injury appeared to stem from a play late in the first quarter when Maye scrambled for an 18-yard gain. When he slipped awkwardly at the end of the run, New York’s Jamien Sherwood Helmet-to-helmet contact established. Maye was slow to get back to his feet but stayed in the game for the final four plays of the drive.

Mayo was asked Monday if he saw any warning signs about Maye after the attack.

“I didn’t,” he said. “I was surprised when (coach Jim) Whalen told me he had to go to the medical tent because he had thrown some good balls afterwards and I thought he was still pretty sharp in that respect.

“But obviously it’s above my pay grade to take him out of the game and put him on the record.”

Maye was 3 of 6 for 23 yards passing and rushed three times for 46 yards and a touchdown in the 25-22 win. He was replaced in the second quarter by veteran Brissett, who finished 15 of 24 for 132 yards and led the Patriots to three scoring drives, including a game-winning sequence that ended with a 1-yard run Rhamondre Stevenson 22 seconds left.

It was the first game action for Brissett since he was benched in favor of Maye earlier this month.

“Jacoby is just – we’ve said this – the ultimate professional,” Mayo said. “He is also a tough guy who is capable of going on offense. And we are blessed to have him.”

Mayo also praised the work of Stevenson, who finished the game with two rushing touchdowns.

“Obviously he had a hard time keeping the ball at the start of the season, right?” Mayo said. “He had been through a lot off the field too. And I just take my hat off to a guy like that who is able to, once he crosses the white lines, nothing else matters. I’m so proud of him and what he’s accomplished.”

Find a healthy scratch

Outside linebacker Joshua Uche was a surprisingly inactive Sunday. With the trade deadline approaching, Mayo was asked if there were any reasons for the decision. “It was just a healthy scratch,” said the coach. “We (wanted to) field the best team out there that we believe will give us the best chance to win.” …Mayo was in his assessment of receivers who had multiple drops in the first three or more quarters. bluntly. “You have to get better,” he said. “I mean, these guys went out there and were open at times. A receiver’s job is to get open and catch the ball – and if you’re really good, then run with it. They definitely need to get better, and they understand that.”… Offensive lineman Mike Onwenu was one of eight players who played against the Jets, a group that included other offensive linemen Ben Brown, Vederian LoweAnd Michael Jordanas well as cornerbacks Christian González And Jonathan Jones and security Marte Mapu. Onwenu is the only player on the roster who hasn’t missed a snap all season.
