John Mulaney’s Duane Reade musical comedy sketch

John Mulaney’s Duane Reade musical comedy sketch

On his sixth round as hosts Saturday Night Live, John Mulaney has truly established himself as a (port) authority when it comes to skits about questionable decisions like ordering lobster at a restaurant, using a bodega restroom, or just the concept of Times Square in general. Mulaney’s latest entry in his musical saga finds him behind a Duane Reade’s cash register at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, where Pete Davidson wants to buy a gallon of milk. “You mean that gallon of milk surrounded by cans of Twisted iced tea in the fridge that’s hotter than the rest of the store?” It turns out that this evil decision is exactly as prophesied and a “Circle of Life” parody about Possummilk sets in motion, sung by Ego Nwodim and Kenan Thompson in costumes reminiscent of Broadway The Lion King.

Then there are a number of current mini acts, including Chloe Fineman leading a group of twinks to the Timothée Chalamet lookalike competition Aladdin Riff on the Turkish Airlines scandal by Eric Adams and Andy Samberg, who plays RFK Jr.’s “Baby Bear Carcass” in a bear suit, cementing his status as the biggest cutie in history. Samberg’s rap, “How’s a bastard orphan of a bear and another bear…?” almost makes up for the sketch’s greatest sin: Marcello Hernandez playing a locked shampoo bottle, alluding to how pharmacies now keep essentials under lock and key Melody of “Do Re Mi.” This is a crime. “Cell Block Tango” was Right! There! It should have been a shampoo, a deodorant, a bottle of Advil, etc. to do the “Cell Block Tango!” A shameful missed opportunity. Out of shame.
