The latest round of grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP) provides $24 million for projects already completed at New York Stewart International Airport in New Windsor. The airport, which most people assume is in Newburgh, is owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The money was used to fund a runway paving rehabilitation project that included installing new LED lights in the runway paving to serve as centerline guidance for aircraft landing and taking off at night.

The Port Authority completed the lighting replacement project and resurfaced 11,817 feet of pavement on Stewart’s runway 9-27 and 6,004 feet of pavement on runway 16-34 in 2017.

The total amount of federal funding just announced for airports across the country is $636 million. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said, “Thanks to this latest round of funding, passengers across the country will benefit as we make airports from Rhode Island to American Samoa more modern and efficient.”

Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole said, “We thank the congressional delegation on both sides of the Hudson River for their continued support and recognition of the critical importance of New York Stewart to this region and within the larger Port Authority airport network through this important grant. Runways are the lifeblood of an airport, so keeping them in good condition is critical to our ability to maintain New York Stewart and prepare for the economic boom we are bringing to this region.”

Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said, “The Port Authority looks forward to continuing to work with our federal partners to fully realize New York Stewart’s potential as we make strategic investments that will attract additional airlines and provide new destinations for travelers throughout the region.”
