Miami-Dade Voters Decide Tax Collector and Election Supervisor – NBC 6 South Florida

Miami-Dade County voters will be asked Tuesday to elect candidates for offices they have never had to vote on before.

Constitutional Amendment 10, passed in 2018, creates five new positions, including county sheriff, tax collector and election officer.

Previously, these offices in Miami-Dade were under the county mayor’s office, but now voters will have their say on Election Day.

The newly elected independent elections director will assume responsibility for the county’s elections department, which has been led by Christina White since 2015.

Democrat JC Planas, a former member of the Florida House of Representatives, won his party’s primary in August. He was a Republican in the Florida House of Representatives but has changed his political affiliation.

NBC6’s Jackie Nespral sits down with JC Planas, who is running for Miami-Dade’s supervisor of elections, a position that is becoming vacant for the first time in 50 years.

Planas faces Republican Rep. Alina Garcia, who is currently a member of the state House of Representatives representing District 115. Garcia was elected to this position in 2022.

Jackie Nespral sits down with the GOP candidate hoping to become the next elections director in Miami-Dade County.

In the county’s tax collector race, Democrat David Richardson faces Republican Dariel Fernandez.

Richardson is a former member of the Florida House of Representatives and former Miami Beach commissioner.

Fernandez is running for his first elected office. He is a board member of the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Miami-Dade County CryptoCurrency Task Force and the Miami-Dade County Community Council Board.

Also on the ballot are the positions of real estate appraiser and district court clerk, as well as comptroller.

According to the county, residents can expect most services to remain the same after the election, although they may look different under new leadership.
