Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday called on President-elect Donald Trump to concede the 2024 presidential election, and a Trump representative said the two “agreed on the importance of unifying the country.”

“President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke by phone today and congratulated him on his historic victory,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement. “President Trump recognized Vice President Harris for her strength, professionalism and tenacity throughout the campaign, and both leaders agreed on the importance of uniting the country.”

Harris called Trump on Wednesday, according to an email to her campaign staff.

“Just moments ago, the Vice President contacted President Trump to concede the race,” campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon said in the email.

Dillion said the defeat was “unfathomably painful” and would take “a long time to process,” but Harris said she would work with President Joe Biden “to ensure a peaceful transfer of power, unlike what we saw in the United States.” “We have seen 2020.”

“It’s difficult. It will take a long time to process,” the email said. “But the work of protecting America from the effects of a Trump presidency begins now.”
