Tom Cotton rejects move to Trump Cabinet: report

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) reportedly declined an offer for a position in the new Trump administration, instead preferring to remain in the Senate.

Two sources familiar with the matter reported Axios that Cotton prefers his position in the Senate. He is running against Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) for the Republicans’ third-highest seat in the Senate. He was considered a leading candidate for the positions of defense secretary and CIA director.

The Washington Examiner asked Cotton for comment.

Although Cotton is a greater champion of national security, he is a key ally of President-elect Donald Trump. He congratulated Trump in front of many others and published a short text opinion on X in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

He has been a staunch defender of Trump in his legal cases, deriding special counsel Jack Smith’s lawsuit against Trump last month in the Jan. 6 case as “a tantrum from a crazy fanatic.”

“This is uncorroborated, uncross-examined hearsay from grand jury statements that are not normally released publicly for this reason,” he said Meet the press Moderator Kristen Welker. “He went to court. He requested special permission to file a brief four times the length of a regular brief and to publish that brief less than 30 days before the election. This is most likely professional misconduct by Jack Smith and should be investigated.”

With reports that the legal proceedings against Trump will be concluded after his election victory, Cotton expressed his gratitude.

“The DOJ’s proceedings against President Trump were an egregious abuse of power as the administration targeted its political opponent,” he said said in a Wednesday post. “I’m glad this armament will stop.”
