Drew Brees compares Saints rookie QB Spencer Rattler to Broncos Bo Nix

The Saints haven’t had nearly the success at quarterback they would have liked since legendary signal-caller Drew Brees retired, and it wasn’t until the loss to the Panthers that New Orleans got their starter back.

Before veteran Derek Carr could return to the field after weeks out due to injury, the team leaned on rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler.

Brees recently commented on Rattler and also compared him in some ways to Denver quarterback Bo Nix.

“It’s interesting to see the two offenses — the Saints and the Broncos — with Klint Kubiak and Sean Payton,” Brees said in an interview with RG.org.

“I think there are a lot of similarities between Spencer Rattler and Bo Nix. They’re both really sporty guys. The Saints were a lot more under center. I think that’s how they built their running game and their play action. Spencer Rattler was moving so much, throwing the ball and running very well – very similar to Bo. I think both of these guys, like every young player, need to make progress in the disadvantage passing game.”

Rattler finished his last appearance, the 26-8 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in which he was on the bench, with 12-for-24 passing for 156 yards. While he had his shining moments, the former Oklahoma and South Carolina quarterback had a tough time in his first year in the NFL.

It will be interesting to see what the Saints do at backup quarterback going forward, especially in the event that Carr has to go down again this season, but there’s no question that Rattler was put in a tough spot when he unexpectedly left something like that was thrown into the fire.

Regardless, the Saints’ main focus right now is on the bigger picture, and that starts with ending a seven-game losing streak. New Orleans will look to make its first attempt when the Atlanta Falcons travel to New Orleans next Sunday.
