November 7 (UPI) – Three people have been arrested in connection with the death of pop star Liam Payne, the superstar member of boy band One Direction, Argentine authorities said Thursday.

Payne, 31, fell to his death from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires on October 16.

The statement from Argentine prosecutor Andrés Madrea said that the investigation into Payne’s death “uncovered illicit conduct, as a result of which three people were charged with the crimes of abandonment of a person followed by murder, as well as supply and brokering of narcotics.”

The report states that someone who was with Payne daily while he was in Buenos Aires is accused of abandoning a person after death. It also said a hotel employee was accused of supplying Payne with cocaine twice while he was on site. A third person is accused of supplying the singer with drugs twice during his stay on Oct. 14, the statement said.

The names of those arrested were not released.

According to prosecutors, Payne had alcohol, cocaine and a prescription antidepressant in his system in the 72 hours before his death.

Prosecutors reported that Payne’s death was caused by “multiple trauma” and “internal and external bleeding” as a result of the fall from the third-floor hotel balcony.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Forensic doctors found that Payne “did not adopt a reflexive position” to protect himself during the fall, “it can be concluded that he may have fallen into a state of semi-consciousness or total unconsciousness.”

Witnesses and hotel employees say the pop star was exhibiting dangerous and disruptive behavior minutes before the fall. Hotel staff called 911 after he “drew too many drugs and alcohol” and “destroyed the entire room.”

“The guest is in a room with a balcony and we are a little afraid that he might do something life-threatening,” the caller said, according to an audio recording obtained by Telemundo from local media.

Payne was part of the hugely popular British pop band that also included Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. The band has been on hiatus since Payne’s death.
