Car backs into Staten Island house, damaging gas line, say National Grid and FDNY

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Several residents were evacuated as a precaution Tuesday afternoon after a gas line was damaged outside a home in Bulls Head.

A heavy smell of gas hung in the air as firefighters responded to the incident at 225 E Signs Rd. between Rustic Woods and Spark Place around 4:40 p.m., according to a New York Fire Department spokesman.

A National Grid spokesperson told Advance/SILive.com that a resident attempted to back his car into a parking space but drove into the front of the house, damaging the gas line.

The National Grid spokesman said the incident only affected the one house and the line was eventually secured by National Grid staff on site, adding that residents were allowed to return to their homes this evening.

There was no immediate damage to the building, while the car, a silver Nissan Rogue, appeared to have minor damage to the rear bumper.

No injuries were reported, the spokesman said.
