Community opposes construction of new petrol station

HARVEST, Ala. (WAFF) – Madison County residents are uniting against a proposed new store. A new Chevron building is planned for the corner of Jeff and Burrell, and residents are not happy about it.

Many neighbors say they have contacted community leaders and believe they cannot prevent the construction of this station.

Madison County Commissioner Phil Vandiver said in a statement that there are no restrictions on locations for building such businesses and that there is no justification for rejecting the gas station.

Neighbors say they were caught off guard, they were given no warning. They only recently saw a sign posted. In addition to raising concerns about their health, neighbors are also concerned because the location is so close to a high school. Joseph Sieburn said he is concerned about what could happen to teenagers if a gas station is so close to the school.

“My biggest concern is the health impact. We’re in close proximity. There’s a high school right next door and kids are running back and forth. It’s a health hazard because there are no sidewalks, but also because minors don’t have high school students here. This could get very bad very quickly,” Sieburn said.

Vandiver says the commission’s hands are tied under state law. We’ve reached out to Chevron for comment and have not yet received a response.
