“A local will work on it with a hammer”

A Reddit user’s frustrating discovery is sparking outrage and concern among electric vehicle owners and accessibility advocates alike.

The post, which quickly gained traction in the r/mildlyinfuriating community, shows a poorly placed electric vehicle charging station that causes more problems than it solves.

"The only way to use this charging station is to block disabled access to the parking lot."

The image shared by the Redditor shows an EVgo charging station directly in front of a parking space that is clearly marked “No Parking.” This confusing layout presents electric vehicle drivers with an impossible choice: violate parking rules or forego charging their vehicle.

“Charging station right in the no parking zone. The only way to use this charging station is to block the disabled access to the parking lot,” the user explained in his post. “Sometimes a local hits it with a hammer.”

They added that they had already contacted the company responsible over a year ago, but no action had been taken to remedy the situation.

This problematic placement is not only inconvenient for electric vehicle drivers, but also raises serious accessibility concerns. Because the charging station potentially blocks disabled access to the parking lot, it potentially violates important accessibility laws and makes life more difficult for people with limited mobility.

As more Americans adopt electric vehicles to reduce their carbon footprint and save on fuel costs, it is critical to install charging stations in convenient, safe and accessible locations for all.

Proper placement of electric vehicle charging stations can encourage more people to switch to electric vehicles, which play an important role in reducing pollution and combating environmental damage. However, such cases can create unnecessary obstacles and frustrations for current and potential electric vehicle owners.

The Reddit community’s reactions to the post were a mix of disbelief and suggested solutions.

One commenter pointed out a possible workaround: “And if you were to reverse park next to that spot, it wouldn’t work? It looks like your charging port is on the other side and the cables look long enough and even appear to have a cord.”

Another user sarcastically remarked, “As you can see, the whole situation is carefully thought out,” pointing to the obvious lack of planning in the placement of the charging station.

A more action-oriented commentator suggested involving local authorities: “Call your local council/city council.”
