Thanks to generous donations, the shelves of food banks in Oxford are full

OXFORD, CT (WFSB) – A heartbreaking situation in Oxford has turned into a heartwarming one.

The community is coming together to help those who lost a lot in Sunday’s severe rainstorm.

Thanks to generous donations, the shelves at the Seymour Oxford Food Bank are now full.

Throughout the week, families came to the Seymour Oxford Food Bank to drop off and pick up donations.

“I’ve lived in Oxford my whole life. It breaks my heart to see everything just washed away,” said Joanne Mazzadra, an Oxford resident.

Joanne Mazzadra delivers food and other essentials to families affected by Sunday’s rainstorm. Some families are unable to leave their homes because driveways and streets are flooded.

The people are incredibly caring and want to do what they can, says the head of the food bank.

“Really coming together, checking on each other, reaching out, bringing donations. How can we help? Can we volunteer? Can we stop by?” said Kristina Walton of the Seymour Oxford Food Bank.

Even the Oxford school inspector is helping out. A truck full of donations from the high school arrived today.

People have been delivering goods all week.

The roads are in such bad shape that the start of school next week has been delayed because school buses cannot use them. But the school board says the most pressing task right now is to help the community rebuild.

“This is a human story, it’s about people. People are suffering, they have no homes, they have no food, they have no drinking water,” said Dr. Robert Miller, superintendent of Oxford.

There will be a meeting next Wednesday to work out a plan for school buses and possibly a start date for school.

In the meantime, families will continue to stock those pantry shelves to help people rebuild their lives.
