Discussion on the master plan for Stith Park, Sullivan’s Island

SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, SC (WCSC) – Sullivan’s Island officials are actively discussing plans to redevelop J. Marshall Stith Park with the goal of turning it into a community center.

The master plan, which is still in the conceptual phase, calls for several improvements, including an inclusive playground, pickleball courts, walking trails and improved drainage.

At the Leisure Committee meeting on Friday, the possibility of establishing a new community swimming pool was also presented.

The plan was shaped by community input collected during three public meetings.

Local resident Karen Byko emphasized the community’s need for a central meeting place.

“Our community doesn’t really have a beating heart. I think that’s what some of the residents expressed today. So it’s just exciting to see that there are so many opportunities for us to utilize this wonderful space that we have here, and I’m excited to see what will actually happen as the process continues,” Byko said.

In the coming weeks, committee members plan to launch a survey on the city’s master plan website and invite citizens to provide additional feedback before the next committee meeting in October.

City officials say the master plan emphasizes preserving the park’s natural elements and also aims to provide flexible green space and a community pavilion.
