Passenger injured after opening plane door and falling onto tarmac at Pearson Airport: Air Canada

An Air Canada passenger was injured at Toronto Pearson Airport this week when he opened the door of his plane while it was still at the gate and then fell, the airline said.

In a statement on Wednesday, Air Canada said the incident occurred on Monday during boarding of a flight from Toronto to Dubai.

“While the aircraft was at the gate, a passenger who had boarded the aircraft normally, instead of going to his seat, opened a cabin door on the opposite side of the aircraft,” the airline’s statement said.

“The passenger sustained injuries when he fell onto the tarmac.”

Emergency services and authorities were called to the scene. In a statement to CBC News on Wednesday, a Peel police spokesperson said the person was “in a state of crisis” when the incident occurred and suffered “relatively minor injuries” when he fell onto the tarmac.

“He was subsequently arrested by police and taken to a local hospital to receive the necessary treatment,” the statement said.

Air Canada said the flight, a Boeing 777 carrying 319 passengers, was later delayed and departed later.

The airline said all approved boarding and cabin operating procedures were followed and that it continues to investigate the incident.
