Review | Union loses to Colorado Rapids in the match for third place

Philadelphia Union welcomed Tai Baribo back into the lineup on Sunday afternoon after missing the semifinals due to suspension. The 26-year-old Israeli striker picked up two yellow cards in the quarterfinals against Mazatlán but was back in the starting lineup for the third-place match against Colorado Rapids. Alongside him up front was Mikael Uhre, who had played with Quinn Sullivan in the 4-4-2 diamond formation in Baribo’s absence in the semifinals. The homegrown player returned to midfield for Sunday’s matinee along with Daniel Gazdag, Leon Flach and Jesús Bueno, while in defense Olivier Mbaizo replaced Nate Harriel as the starter, playing opposite Kai Wagner, while Jack Elliott and Jakob Glesnes filled the usual center-back positions.

Calvin Harris 38′ | Colorado Rapids took the lead for the first time in the 38th minute with a goal from 24-year-old midfielder Calvin Harris. Rafael Navarro beat Jack Elliott with a 2-1 lead and passed to Harris, who fired the ball past Blake to make it 1-0.

Tai Baribo 41′ | Colorado Rapids didn’t hold onto their lead for long, as Philadelphia Union responded with an invigorating equalizer within three minutes of the Rapids’ first goal. Kai Wagner headed a pass into the box where Baribo was in position to put his own header past Coatesville, Pennsylvania-native goalkeeper Zack Steffen and into the net.
