East Hampton restaurant, longtime VFW post for sale

Coming to the market is a prime commercial building at the entrance to East Hampton Village, known to most as a restaurant but also home to a local Veterans of Foreign Wars base for about 40 years.

The space at 290 Montauk Highway, which has been occupied by Highway Restaurant & Bar for the past ten years, is asking $6.175 million. Hal Zwick and Jeff Sztorc of Hamptons Compass Commercial are offering the property.

“We are proud to represent this historic property at the gateway to East Hampton Village,” says Sztorc. “This location is perfect for a variety of business concepts and has proven to be an important focal point for the community.”

Records show the property is owned by a group called the East Hampton Veterans Association Inc. The building was also home to Everit Albert Herter Post #550 VFW Herter, whose family once owned the Creeks, now Ron Perelman’s estate across the street, and was killed in World War I.

The 340 square meter restaurant offers 116 seats and also the option of outdoor dining. The single-story building with 103 meters of street frontage stands on an 800 hectare site.

The space is designed as an American-style bistro and has a fully equipped kitchen. There is also a staff house.

“As you reach the border of East Hampton Village from Wainscott, the Montauk Highway becomes noticeably wooded, with only a handful of commercial properties lining the road and the landscape changes to some of the most valuable properties in the world,” the listing states.

Nearby local shops include Serena & Lily, The Clubhouse and the Wainscott Shoppes, which include Levain Bakery and Barry’s Bootcamp.

The Highway Restaurant & Bar has been open since 2012 and is operated by Autostrada Catering and Retail.
