Nature programs take place at Lake Carlos State Park – Alexandria Echo Press

ALEXANDRIA — Lake Carlos State Park hosts weekend events that anyone can participate in. Children must be accompanied by an adult and any program is subject to cancellation due to inclement weather.

Registration is not required and all programs are free to attend, but a valid park permit is required for park entry. Park permits cost $7 per day or $35 for the year. Permits can also be borrowed from the Douglas County Library.

Friday, August 30

9am to 11am – Fishing Frenzy Friday
Meet at the fishing docks near the amphitheater for a morning of fish and fishing. Participants will “discover the world of fish,” the press release states, and learn how to catch them. The event will include a series of hands-on stations where participants can hone their fishing skills, then they can land their own fish. All equipment will be provided, and only non-Minnesota residents ages 16 and older will need a fishing license. Participants are asked to arrive on time, as this will be a full two-hour program.

Saturday, August 31

10 to 11 a.m. – Dragonflies and damselflies: story time
“Head to the Visitor Center and experience this storytelling program for preschoolers (2-6) that your little ones are sure to enjoy!” says the press release. Dragonflies and damselflies are discussed and little ones will learn how they emerge from the water to fly around the park, how they eat other insects and contribute to the park’s ecosystem.

2 to 4 p.m. – Archery in the park
Meet at the swimming beach to participate in one of the oldest arts still practiced today. All are welcome to come learn the valuable skill of archery. The event is free, all equipment is provided and no previous experience is necessary. Anyone can stop by the beach house at any time during the program to participate. Children must be at least 8 years old to participate in this event and they must be accompanied by an adult. Personal equipment is not allowed.
