Taylor Fritz beats Alexander Zverev and reaches the semifinals of the US Open

American Taylor Fritz defeated No. 4 Alexander Zverev 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4 and 7-6 (3) in the quarterfinals of the US Open on Tuesday, reaching his first semifinal at a major championship.

For 12th-seeded Fritz, it was his fourth major victory this season against a player ranked in the ATP’s top 10. This is the most wins in a year by an American since Andre Agassi won five in 1999. Before this season, Fritz had a record of 0-11 in major tournaments against players ranked in the ATP’s top 10.

With the victory over Zverev – a repeat of their fourth-round match at Wimbledon – Fritz joins Frances Tiafoe (US Open 2022), Tommy Paul (Australian Open 2023) and Ben Shelton (US Open 2023) as the only active Americans with semifinal appearances at major tennis tournaments.

Tiafoe is aiming for his second appearance in a major semifinal when he faces No. 9 seed Gregor Dimitrov in the evening session at Arthur Ashe Stadium. A win for Tiafoe would guarantee the first American finalist at a major tournament since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon in 2009, when he lost an epic match to Roger Federer 16-14 in the fifth set.

Fritz’s 16 major tournament victories are the most by an American in a single year since Roddick (16 in 2009), who is also the last American to win a Grand Slam (US Open 2003).
