Man fatally injured in boating accident off Old Saybrook identified, search for 2 missing men continues – NBC Connecticut

Two men are still missing after a boating accident in Long Island Sound on Labor Day that left one of their friends dead. The search for the missing boaters begins Wednesday.

According to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (EnCon Police), nine friends were on the 31-foot motorboat returning from a day on Block Island when it struck a pier at the mouth of the Connecticut River around 9:15 p.m. Monday.

One person was found dead in the vessel. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has identified him as 34-year-old Christopher Hallahan of Westbrook.

Six other people who were on the boat were taken to the hospital and one of them is in critical condition, Connecticut Environmental Police Captain Keith Williams said Tuesday morning.

Officials believe this person was driving the boat, but have not confirmed this. Another of the six people has been released from the hospital and two men are still missing.

One person died, two others are missing and five people are in the hospital in a boating accident in Old Saybrook on Monday evening. The search for the two missing people was suspended overnight and will resume on Wednesday morning.

The capsized boat was recovered from the river on Tuesday and pulled out of the water at around 11:30 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing, but investigators believe that darkness and speed are possible factors in the cause of the accident.

The search was interrupted on Tuesday at around 7:30 p.m. and resumed on Wednesday at 8:00 a.m.

Officials could not yet identify the other people on the boat, but said they had ties to the local community.

Multiple agencies were involved in the search, including police and fire crews from several surrounding towns, the State Police Dive Unit, and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter on Cape Cod.

On Tuesday, divers were again at the mouth of the Connecticut River to search for two people who are still missing after a motorboat ran into a pier off Old Saybrook on Monday evening.

Four people were injured in a similar accident on Labor Day weekend in 2023. A few weeks earlier, another boat crashed into the dock at the mouth of the river and one man was hospitalized.
