Kyle Schwarber, Cristopher Sanchez and Kody Clemens lead Phillies to sweep in Toronto – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Kyle Schwarber opened the game with a home run for the second straight day, Cristopher Sanchez found his rhythm after a shaky first inning, and the Phillies completed a two-game road win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Schwarber hit three home runs on Tuesday as part of a five-hit night and hit another second-pitch bomb in Wednesday’s 4-2 win. He is tied with Alfonso Soriano in 2003 for most leadoff home runs (13) in a season.

Kody Clemens, who had two key at-bats off the bench on Tuesday night with an RBI groundout and a double before Schwarber’s game-winning home run, gave the Phillies a lead that lasted Wednesday with a two-run home run in the second inning against Bowden Francis.

The Blue Jays stunned Sanchez with four doubles in their first eight at-bats, but couldn’t do anything against him after that. The left-hander delivered seven walk-free innings with two runs and seven strikeouts, improving his record to 10-9 with a 3.45 ERA in 159 innings.

Sanchez’s seven innings were crucial because the Phillies needed six relievers to get from the bottom of the first to the bottom of the ninth on Tuesday after Tyler Phillips recorded just two outs. They only needed Jeff Hoffman (1.82 ERA) and Carlos Estevez (2.17), who did what he usually does: a no-hit number.

The Phillies are 83-56 and on a roll. They have won four consecutive series against the Royals, Astros, Braves and Blue Jays, going 9-3 in the process. They continue to hold a nearly unassailable lead in the division over the Braves, remain ahead of the Brewers for second place and keep pace with the Dodgers for the best overall record.

One downside to this win was Bryce Harper’s early exit. Harper was hit by a pitch in his left elbow in his first and only at-bat. He was obviously in pain, but stayed in the game until he came on in his second at-bat to replace Edmundo Sosa.

Harper is more than a little banged up. He’s dealing with a wrist injury that’s lingered for over three months, soreness in his right elbow, and now soreness in his left elbow. It wouldn’t be at all surprising if manager Rob Thomson played it safe with him against the Marlins, even if it means he has to miss a game.

The Phillies have also played five straight games without Alec Bohm, who sprained his left hand while swinging last Thursday. The team hopes to have Bohm back for the four-game series in Miami Thursday-Sunday, and Thomson reiterated in Toronto that it is not an IL situation.

The Phils will start Ranger Suarez, Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola in their first three games at loanDepot Park, with Sunday’s start still to be determined after Phillips was upgraded to Triple-A on Wednesday.
