Russell Wilson is having problems with his calf before the start of the 2024 NFL season.

ESPN’s Brooke Pryor reported that Wilson was being evaluated for “tightness in the same calf he injured during training camp” and that he was “limited” in Thursday’s practice due to “an excess of caution.”

Tomlin also said Russell Wilson was being evaluated further after reporting tightness in the same calf he injured during practice and was limited in his play today out of caution.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Wilson could miss Week 1 due to his injury:

Wilson injured his calf during conditioning training in August and missed the early stages of training camp and the preseason. On August 28, he was named the Steelers’ Week 1 starter.

Wilson signed a one-year deal with Pittsburgh after a difficult two-year stint with the Denver Broncos. Denver failed to qualify for the postseason in either season, but showed some statistical improvement in his second year and should at least be an improvement over Kenny Pickett in Pittsburgh.

Justin Fields, whom the Steelers signed from the Chicago Bears in March, could be used as a regular player if Wilson is out.

Fields – who struggled in his three seasons with the Bears – completed 61.4 percent of his passes last season for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also ran for 657 yards and four touchdowns.

Pittsburgh will open the 2024 season on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.
