Black Myth Wukong follows Elden Ring’s example with a DLC expansion before a sequel

Black Myth Wukong follows Elden Ring’s example with a DLC expansion before a sequel

Black Myth Wukong developer Game Science is working on an Elden Ring-style expansion for the game ahead of a sequel.

A Bloomberg report on Game Science investor Hero Games has revealed updated sales figures for the smash hit Black Myth Wukong, which set Steam parallel records upon its release last month.

According to Bloomberg, an incredible 18 million copies of Black Myth Wukong have been sold on PC and PlayStation 5 in just two weeks, bringing in over $700 million in sales to date. This makes Black Myth Wukong one of the fastest-selling games of all time, alongside Grand Theft Auto 5 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

In a follow-up tweet, Daniel Ahmad, director of research and insights at Niko Partners, said the $700 million figure was actually dated August 30, and that Black Myth Wukong is now at around $800 million. That’s an astonishing return for a game that had a $70 million budget over six years of development, according to Bloomberg.

However, fans will be most interested in Game Science’s plans for Black Myth Wukong now that it’s out. While the developer has yet to comment, Bloomberg’s report confirmed that an expansion is in the works, with Game Science looking to follow the lead of Elden Ring. Elden Ring, itself one of the best-selling video games of all time, saw a major expansion DLC called Shadow of the Erdtree released in 2024, two years after the base game.

From Bloomberg: “It won’t take another six years for the next chapter of a planned series based on Chinese mythology to arrive — though it won’t be a sequel, said Wu (Daniel Wu, head of Hero Games). Game Science is working on an expansion for Wukong that will give him a chance to monetize the game a second time. 2022’s Elden Ring, a title with a similar gameplay style and design, has shown how the release of an expansion — Shadow of the Erdtree this year — can spark a new sales boost for the original.”

Last month, IGN confirmed an email from the Black Myth: Wukong marketing team at Hero Games, which told content creators granted a Steam key that they were not allowed to use “feminist propaganda” in their coverage or use so-called “trigger words” like COVID-19. Hero Games did not respond to IGN’s request for comment on the matter at the time, and Wu declined to comment when asked by Bloomberg.

Game science has not yet provided an answer to Previous report from IGN Compilation of numerous sexist comments from studio founders and other developers over the last decade.

Meanwhile, the delay in the release of Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox is due to an exclusive deal with Sony and not a development issue with Microsoft’s consoles, a well-informed source told IGN.

“We do not wish to comment on our partners’ deals with other platform holders, but can confirm that the delay is not due to any Xbox platform limitations communicated to us.”
