KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The family of the victim shot outside Walmart is asking for answers. Ronald Barnett, 71, was killed at a Northland Walmart around 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 21.

Taquiza Johnson, a former KCPD officer, is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with his death.

Elizabeth Moon, Barnett’s daughter, told KCTV5 it didn’t seem real to her.

“It’s terrible, the house is silent,” Moon said. “I’m very angry. I can’t believe that a former police officer would do something like this to someone who is innocent and wouldn’t hurt a fly.”

Barnett has lived with Moon and her family for over a decade. The last few years have not always been easy.

“He had kidney cancer and they took part of his kidney,” Moon said. “But he went back a few weeks ago and they declared him healthy.”

A new beginning and a new chance in life were taken away so quickly.

“I just don’t think he deserves mercy,” Moon said when asked what she thought justice would look like. “He shot my father and then walked away and went home.”

Moon said her father was funny, a family man and reliable.

“I’m just sorry that this happened and he had to go like this,” Moon said.

Johnson pleaded not guilty. He will appear in court again on September 3 to decide on bail.
