A solid new pizzeria on Second Ave

There is now a new place to grab a slice at 1393 Second Avenue between 72nd and 73rd Streets. Krave Pizza opened on Monday, August 12th and has already received some positive reviews.

“Great addition to the neighborhood, great staff, nice and clean, great pizza!!,” said one customer who gave them a 5-star review on Google, although one reviewer only gave them 2 stars and described, “Weak sauce and cheese on heavy dough.” The other three reviewers gave them 5 stars (at the time of writing).

Krave Pizza is an expansion of Krafe Café and Deli, which opened in November at 1399 Second Avenue, just a few doors down. The deli opened in the space previously occupied by Little Vincent’s Pizza, so opening a pizzeria made sense.

The space is small, with a long pizza counter and a few tables for two. On a Sunday afternoon, most customers ordered pizza slices to go and grabbed a bite while walking around the neighborhood. Service was quick and always friendly.

All the usual pizza flavors are available. A plain slice is $3.50, a pepperoni slice is $4.95, and most “specialty” slices are $5.50. There are a few interesting options like a Margherita with fresh tomatoes and a dash of basil and mushrooms and broccoli.

All varieties are available as 14- or 18-inch pies and range in price from $17.99 for a regular 14-inch pie to $36.97 for an 18-inch pie with Sicilian pepperoni. There are also six varieties of Strombolis, all of which are $7.99, except for the meat varieties at $8.99. They have a fridge full of sodas and other beverages.

The pizza is better than the average counter-service slice, with a crust that’s crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. Both the regular and Margherita varieties had just the right amount of cheese and tasted great with a sprinkle of red pepper flakes. The space is clean and bright, with upbeat pop music playing in the background. With several schools nearby and students returning soon, it’s sure to be a popular lunch spot during the week.
