“Agatha All Along” stars announce “gay explosion” in Marvel series

The cast and creatives behind “Agatha All Along” celebrate the Disney+ series’ unprecedented LGBTQ representation.

“I agree,” said Sasheer Zamata, who plays Jennifer Kale, when told at Monday’s premiere that “Agatha” has been described as “the gayest project Marvel has ever done.” “You’ll see it when you watch it. Witches are inherently queer simply because we are outsiders and we are marginalized for many reasons. This show shows a really good representation of different types of people and shows that we can all use the power we have within us to move forward and be great.”

Joe Locke, who plays Teen, explained: “It has many facets and being gay is one of them. That’s one of the great things about the show. … Teen is a queer guy in the show, but he’s not the driving force, which I think is really great. It’s really nice to just have these positive queer characters.”

Kathryn Hahn, who plays Agatha Harkness, explained: “The most exciting thing about it is that it’s not exactly about that. It’s so normalized.”

Locke came out publicly shortly after his acting debut in “Heartstopper,” which made him a star. Zamata, a former “Saturday Night Live” actress, came out as queer in an interview with LGBTQ website Them earlier this month. “I’ve always looked up to Wanda Sykes, another black queer woman in comedy who is living her truth, which is really inspiring and amazing,” she said at the premiere of “Agatha.” “I’m proud to be among so many amazing people who are doing that openly.”

Aubrey Plaza, who said in a 2016 interview with the Advocate that she falls in love with both men and women, was tight-lipped about details but joked about “Agatha”: “There’s going to be a gay explosion at the end.”

Plaza plays Rio Vidal, while Marvel newcomer Patti LuPone plays Lila Calderu.

“It’s the gayest show at Marvel,” said Ali Ahn, who plays Alice Wu-Gulliver. “There’s a lot of pomp that we’re already competing with. I think what makes it even gayer is that we’re singing with Patti.”
