Albums of the Week: Various Artists | Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin

Silver Patron Saints: The songs of Jesse Malin is both a tribute and a benefit album, with all proceeds going to Malin’s Sweet relief Artists Fund. “This record is also an explosive and long overdue educational project, uninterrupted star time in energetically personal turns in the name of a great rock’n’roll songbook,” writes a long-time supporter David Fricke.

Malin has long been committed to the causes of others and is grateful to all the musicians who have rallied around him, including Bruce Springsteen, Billie Joe Armstrong, Lucinda Williams And Elvis Costello, Holding on, Tommy Stinson, Alison Mossheart with the late, great Wayne Kramer, Tom Morello, Counting crows, Dinosaur Jr., The Wallflowers, Spoon, Susanna Hoffs, Frank Turner And Rancidamong other things.

Malin adds: “It’s a feeling of liberation, but I also don’t want to keep repeating myself. My whole process – since I was 13 – has been to evolve and challenge myself with each record. I really hope that people in all parts of the world can identify with these songs, just the spectrum of emotions that you overcome by celebrating life through music and art.”

In May 2023, Malin suffered a rare stroke that left him paralyzed from the waist down. “I suffer from severe anxiety and insomnia,” he says. “You sink into dark thoughts. But I just have to think positive and believe in it.” He now undergoes a rigorous daily physiotherapy and stem cell therapy program.

“I’m getting some strength back in my legs, but it’s going much slower than I would like. I don’t want to give the impression that I’m ready to James Brown “I definitely have a long way to go, but I’m blessed and so grateful for the amazing fans and friends I have,” he says.

Fricke adds: “Jesse Malin knows scars – from his youth, observations and more. They all tell stories, and he is not finished telling them yet. Silver Patron Saints The gang is back at the bar and comes on stage to toast the composer and his story so far.”
