Anna Delvey, born Anna Sorokin, is a con artist from Moscow, Russia, born on January 23, 1991. From 2013 to 2017, Delvey posed as a wealthy heiress in order to gain access to New York’s upper-class social and art scene.

Her parents were working-class citizens of Russia (then the Soviet Union) and she emigrated with her family from Russia to Germany at the age of 16. In 2011, she moved to London and then to Paris before moving to New York City in 2013. When she arrived in Manhattan, she did an internship at Purplea French fashion magazine. While working there, she founded a private members’ club and an art foundation and built a community of high-level contacts.

She later created fake financial documents to support her claims that she had a multi-million euro trust fund and forged several wire transfer confirmations. She used these documents and fake checks to defraud banks, friends and real estate agents into paying her cash and giving her large loans without collateral, which she used to finance her expensive lifestyle.

For four years, Delvey defrauded and swindled major banks, hotels and private individuals out of a total of $275,000. In 2017, one of Delvey’s former friends Rachel DeLoache Williams helped the NYPD conduct an undercover operation after accusing Delvey of defrauding her of $62,000, which ultimately led to her arrest.

She was arrested in 2018 and remained in prison until her sentencing in May 2019. She served two years of that sentence after being convicted of grand larceny, second-degree theft, and theft of services. She was also ordered to pay a $24,000 fine and $199,000 in restitution and faced deportation to Germany. On October 5, 2022, Delvey paid $10,000 bail and was released from prison, where she was placed under house arrest while she fought her deportation.

Delvey’s story received widespread public attention in 2018 when Williams wrote an article in Vanity Fair about her experiences as Delvey’s friend, which she expanded upon in her book. Netflix paid Delvey $320,000 for the rights to her story and later developed the story into the 2022 miniseries The invention of AnnaDelvey’s life has also been the main subject of other television shows, podcasts and even theater productions.

In September 2024, Delvey was cast in Dancing with the stars Season 33. She was partner of Ezra Sosa in his first season as a professional.
