‘Anyone could have gotten in’: Pelosi insists Harris won Democratic nomination in an ‘open process’

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) claimed on Monday’s episode of “The View” that there was an “open” process and anyone could have been the Democratic nominee after President Biden dropped out of the race.

Pelosi was among the Democrats instrumental in efforts to force Biden to resign after his disastrous debate in June, which appears to have led to a rift between her and the president.

“Some people feel like a lot of feelings are hurt because you played an outsized role in his resignation, which was very selfless but very difficult for him to do,” said co-host and Harris supporter Ana Navarro. “I’ve heard that Jill Biden and her team, that there are people close to the Biden team, who are mad at you. Have you spoken to him and what is your response to that?”

“No,” Pelosi replied. “My point was we need a better campaign, like I said, a decision to win. I didn’t see us on the path to victory. So it wasn’t that he didn’t run. It’s just that we need to run differently in this case. The president made his decision: patriotic, selfless, the most consequential president in modern times. He was a great president of the United States.”

Critics said Democrats had subverted democracy by essentially crowning Harris without letting their voters decide who the new presidential candidate should be. Navarro also spoke about that process.

“But initially you wanted an open process,” the co-moderator told Pelosi. “You didn’t support Kamala. You wanted an open process, even though you knew her very well from San Francisco. Do you think now, looking back, that was a mistake?”

“It was an open (process),” Pelosi insisted. “Anyone could have gotten in. She got in and won, and she had a president of the United States backing her who was very respected. So that meant a lot, but people don’t understand that other people could have gotten in. She just got it done. Politically smart, like I told you.”

“I was one of the first to take the initiative, right? Within 24 hours,” she said.
