Austin restaurant Elementary closes its South Lamar location

It’s summer vacation at elementary school. School is out forever at elementary school, at least in the South Lamar branch of the little nostalgic restaurant.

Elementary closed its doors without warning over the weekend after being in business for just over a year. Partners Chris Arial, Allan Bautista and chef Colter Peck announced on Instagram late last week that their restaurant, which served modern international cuisine that was often a mix of cultures (mole tortellini, gnocchi with chili chips), was preparing for its final meal.

The trio, thanking guests for their love and support, opened the restaurant in late July 2023 at 2026 S. Lamar Blvd. in the building that previously housed Henri’s Wine Bar.

Elementary’s space, menu design and programming reflect playful elements of childhood, with theme nights, a colorful design palette and nostalgically inspired dishes.

“Unfortunately, we had to reimagine this space because what we originally intended just wasn’t working. The understanding from guests was difficult to overcome,” Arial told Eater Austin, adding that the financial strain of Austin’s notoriously difficult summers also contributed to the decision to close.

The owners said on Instagram that the parting message was “not goodbye, but see you later.” The partners’ adjacent wine bar, Hopscotch, will remain open.
