Retailer Bath & Body Works pulled a seasonal candle called “Snowed In” from its shelves when people noticed that its snowflake design was reminiscent of Ku Klux Klan hoods.

The design was intended to look like a snowflake cutout, but after the design became the talk of the town in many online forums, the candle was nicknamed the Klandle and KKKandle because of the pointed snowflake tips and the holes that look like they are for the eyes.

Bath & Body Works apologized for the design

After the holiday-themed candle was announced, comments about the candle began circulating online. The design reminded some of the hoods of the Ku Klux Klan, a white supremacist group founded in 1866 that surged during the civil rights movement, according to Britannica.

The company apologized regarding the three-wick “Snowed In” candle.

“At Bath & Body Works, we are committed to listening to our teams and customers and fixing any mistakes we make – even those as unintentional as this one,” Bath & Body Works said in a statement shared with USA TODAY . “We apologize to anyone we offended, are working quickly to have this article removed, and are currently evaluating our process moving forward.”
