Bengals vs. Giants result: Cincinnati wins an ugly defensive battle in the Meadowlands 17-7 on Sunday Night Football

The Cincinnati Bengals don’t charge style points. None was given on Sunday evening.

The jokes about the Bengals never showing up in September aren’t as funny anymore because it’s mid-October and they still seem to be stuck in the mud. At least they got an ugly victory. The defense made enough plays to support an offense that had surprisingly little going, and they managed a 17-7 victory over the New York Giants.

If you want to be optimistic, it was a good sign for the Bengals that their struggling defense played by far their best game of the season and pulled out a win. Provided the offense plays much better than it did Sunday night, perhaps this is a sign that the Bengals can still play a role in the AFC playoff picture. They just haven’t looked like this team often this season.

The Bengals got a touchdown run from Joe Burrow and not much else before running back Chase Brown ended the game with a 30-yard TD run with 1:58 left. Cincinnati, 1-4 entering Week 6, is desperate for wins and Sunday night’s victory brings it back to 2-4 on the season. But anyone who’s been watching knows that the Bengals don’t appear to be any closer to their early-season doldrums.

Live40 updates

  • The Bengals win an ugly defensive battle 17-7

  • The Giants move the ball into Bengals territory with less than a minute to play

Greg Joseph missed a 45-yard field goal with 55 seconds left as the Giants tried to cut the game to just one possession, and Cincinnati will kneel for it

  • Chase Brown almost puts the game on ice for the Bengals

The 30-yard rush came with just under two minutes to play and gave the Bengals a two-point lead.

  • Burrow buys himself time to get the critical first down with two minutes left

On a third-and-12, Burrow scrambled to his right and found Andrei Iosivas for the big conversion.

  • The Giants are down another fourth down, and after reaching their last three, they come up short

DJ Turner breaks up the pass and the Giants turn it over on downs with three minutes to play. The Bengals lead 10-7 and can close the deal with a few first downs.

  • Big first down for Tyrone Tracy

A huge third down run by Tyrone Tracy puts the Giants back in Bengals territory. In the second half, the Giants had some success passing the ball and passing the ball and making their way down the field.

  • Joe Burrow goes into the blue tent

Burrow was hit by Brian Burns to force an incomplete 3rd down and a Bengals punt, but all eyes will be on Burrow and whether he can return to the game. Here’s the piece that Burrow sent into the tent.

  • Greg Joseph misses from 47 yards

Giants come away empty-handed after another methodical move that included a fourth down conversion. Cincinnati still leads 10-7 in a game that featured excellent play from both defenses.

  • Facing another fourth-and-short play, the Giants rolled the dice again and took the win

This time it was the 6-foot-3 Daniel Jones who made it into Bengals territory with a QB sneak at the 45-yard line.

  • Giants open drive with 14-yard pass to Johnson

Daniel Jones hit tight end Theo Johnson and opened the series with the first down on a play-action pass. That was the last play of the third quarter and the Giants trailed 10-7.

  • Dexter Lawrence takes Burrow to the ground for a 4th down

Evan McPherson gave Cincinnati a three-point lead, 10-7, after Lawrence recorded his seventh sack of the season and the Giants’ fourth of the night

  • Burrow to Chase, and this one is just special

When you’ve been playing together for as long as these two have, things like that just happen.

  • Tyrone Tracy ends the drive for the Giants

16 plays, 79 yards and two fourth down conversions en route to the end zone, and the Giants score an offensive touchdown at MetLife Stadium for the first time in 2024.

  • Pass interference against Cincinnati puts the ball at the 1-yard line

Darius Slayton drew the foul and the Giants are in business

  • The Giants get another fourth down and convert it

Tyrone Tracy bounced it outside, and his second tackle provided the first down for the Giants, who put the ball in field goal range.

  • The Giants gain the first down with another 4th down attempt

The Giants use an old freeze option straight out of a college playbook to give themselves some breathing room with a second first down on the drive.

  • Zach Moss coughs, the Giants recover

Azeez Ojulari again! This time he fumbled with the crown of his helmet, and the first Cincinnati turnover of the game couldn’t have come at a better time for the Giants.

  • The Giants open the third quarter with turnovers

An inaccurate throw by Daniel Jones that Darius Slayton couldn’t knock off the turf, a short loss on a run by Tyrone Tracy Jr., a short completion to tight end Theo Johnson and a pass breakup by Mike Hilton. An extremely tough series for the Giants and Cincy takes over at the 38 yard line in plus territory.

  • Halftime: Bengals 7, Giants 0

The two defensive lines dominated the game. Aside from Joe Burrow’s big performance, neither offense did much. Burrow and Jones remain their teams’ leading rushers, and neither has been spectacular at throwing the football. Burrow is 9 of 15 for 87 yards and Jones is 8 of 16 for 81 yards.

The Giants sacked Burrow three times and the Bengals sacked Jones once, and a pressure forced the game’s only turnover.

Both offenses will have to make some adjustments to get the ball moving, but both teams should be happy with their defensive efforts.

Additionally, special teams could play a role in a low-scoring game, and Giants punt returner Ihmir Smith-Marsette left the game with a foot injury and is questionable whether he will return.

  • Ojulari again!

The Giants now have three sacks in the game after leading the league in that category in Week 6.
