Bishop England says no fans will be allowed at game against Philip Simmons | Prep Zone Sports

Citing “the current climate between our fan bases” and other factors, Bishop England High School will not allow spectators at its Friday night football game against Philip Simmons.

The game is scheduled for September 13th at 7:30 p.m. at Jack Cantey Stadium on Daniel Island.

“Out of an abundance of caution related to concerns posted on social media across the state and country containing threats of violence, and due to the current climate between our fan bases, we have reached out to the Philip Simmons High School administration and decided that the varsity football game between our schools scheduled for tomorrow night will be played without spectators,” Bishop England High School Principal Mary Anne Tucker and President Patrick Finneran said in an announcement released Thursday.

“We are offering free streaming to anyone who wants to watch the game virtually. The juniors and B team games (Thursday) are cancelled. Safety is always our top priority and is the driving force behind this decision.

“As a Catholic school, we strive to create an environment that is not only safe for our community, but also characterized by the Gospel values of faith, hope and charity. While we are disappointed that these changes are necessary, we hope to move forward by emulating the example of Jesus, the Master Teacher.”

A spokesman for the Catholic Diocese of Charleston confirmed the announcement. Media representatives will be allowed at the game, school officials said.

The most important games at a glance:

Berkeley (0-3) at West Ashley (2-1)

Although Berkeley won its opening game of the season in Week Zero against Ashley Ridge, the result was reversed and Ashley Ridge won by walkover because Berkeley fielded an ineligible player.

Still, Berkeley and West Ashley are two of the top teams in the region and it should be a very exciting game. Last year’s game was a wild 40-31 win for Berkeley as the Stags rallied from a 31-14 deficit in the fourth quarter.

Both teams have improved significantly on defense and are both very physical teams. Berkeley’s passing game was a hit in a close loss to Summerville last week and is a concern for West Ashley’s defense. On the other hand, when the Wildcats impose their will in the running game, they are tough to beat.

Shelton says: Berkeley 28, West Ashley 24.

Ashley Ridge (3-0) at Oceanside Collegiate (1-2)

Oceanside Collegiate continues with a very tough non-regional schedule, with powerhouse Dutch Fork coming next week. This game feels like points, lots of points. Both teams have good quarterbacks, but Ashley Ridge has the edge in the running game.

Oceanside Collegiate needs to score points as Ashley Ridge has been able to score at will through three games. Depth could be a factor and Ashley Ridge has the edge.

Shelton says: Ashley Ridge 42, Oceanside Collegiate 31.

Philip Simmons (2-1) at Bishop England (2-0)

The Bishops are 2-0 since 2019 and new coach Logan Hall has instilled confidence in his team. The team has won just four games in the last two seasons.

This will be the seventh meeting between the two programs, with Philip Simmons winning the last three meetings. The Iron Horses have established themselves as one of the top programs in the region and are ranked in the top 10 nationally in Class AA.

This is by far the toughest challenge of the start of the season for Bishop England but will give Hall a real idea of where his team stands this season. Philip Simmons will be looking to maintain the momentum from the start of the season.

Shelton says: Philip Simmons 34, Bishop England 23.

Balance after two weeks: 4-2
