Bodycam footage of Tyreek Hill’s detention released: “Take me to jail”

The Miami-Dade Police Department released bodycam footage of the incident involving Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill on Monday.

Miami-Dade Police Director Stephane V. Daniels said more than an hour of footage would be released as part of a commitment to transparency. An investigation into the incident was ongoing and an officer involved in the situation has been placed on “administrative duties.”

The footage begins with police officers pulling up next to Hill’s vehicle and telling him he was speeding. Hill asked how fast he was going, but was told to pull over.

The officer knocked on the window and Hill told the officer not to knock on his window like that when he gave him his license. Hill then told the officer to give him his ticket and rolled the window back up. The officer told Hill to keep his window closed.

“Roll down the window or I’ll get you out of the car. And actually, get out of the car,” said the officer.

A second officer threatened to break the window.

“We’re not playing that game,” another officer said as the bodycam showed one of the officers opening the door, reaching into Hill’s vehicle and pulling him out of the vehicle with the help of a third officer.

“Hey Drew, I’m under arrest, Drew,” Hill was heard saying, apparently in conversation with his agent Drew Rosenhaus.

One officer said: “When we tell you to do something, you do it. Not what you want. But when we tell you. You get a little confused.”

“Take me to jail, brother. Do what you have to do,” Hill replied as he lay down on the ground.

A passerby in another vehicle near the incident appeared to ask what was wrong with Hill. The wide receiver replied, “I didn’t do anything.”

Officers made Hill sit on the curb next to his vehicle. Hill told them he had had surgery on his knee as he fell to the ground, and an officer asked if he had had surgery on his ears.

Another officer on the scene asked the officer whose bodycam footage was released if he knew who the man sitting on the ground was. The officer on the bodycam said he did not know who he was, and the other officer responded, “That’s one of the Dolphins’ star players.”

The officer wearing the body camera explained what had happened to a supervisor. In the background, Hill shouted, “I’m just a black man, that’s all.”

Hill was issued traffic violations and left in the passenger seat of his vehicle with his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

Dolphins defensive lineman Calais Campbell arrived at the scene about four minutes after the footage began with his hands raised. He was ordered to back away from the scene or he would be handcuffed. Campbell said he wanted to know what happened.

Campbell was later handcuffed.

The officer who spoke to Campbell also approached Jonnu Smith, who was also stopped to make sure everything was OK. The officer asked for Smith’s driver’s license.
