Brewers 2-1 Phillies (September 18, 2024) Match Report

MILWAUKEE – Jake Bauers hit an RBI single in the ninth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers, who had earlier secured the NL Central title by defeating the Cubs, beat Philadelphia 2-1 on Wednesday night, preventing the Phillies from securing a playoff spot.

Bauers’ single against Phillies closer Carlos Estévez (4-5) scored Jackson Chourio, who had hit a triple.

Milwaukee’s closer Devin Williams (1-0) struck out Alec Bohm, Bryson Stott and Brandon Marsh in succession in the ninth inning.

Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta made his 31st start of the season, the most of his career, allowing one run on two hits in five innings, while allowing nine strikeouts and two walks.

Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola, one of the NL leaders in innings pitched, went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits, striking out nine and allowing one walk. In his previous two starts, he had allowed 10 earned runs in nine innings.

Together, the teams achieved 28 strikeouts.

For the Phillies, the magic number is one to qualify for the playoffs and four to secure the NL East.

Bohm gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead in the second inning with his first home run since August 15.

Rhys Hoskins tied the game with his 25th home run in the fifth inning. The former Phillie also hit a double.

Milwaukee right-hander Joe Ross allowed a single and a walk when he came in for Peralta to start the sixth inning. But Ross struck out Nick Castellanos and Bohm before being replaced by left-hander Jared Koenig, who forced Stott into a groundout on the first pitch.

Milwaukee clinched its second straight division title and reached the playoffs for the sixth time in the last seven seasons thanks to the Chicago Cubs’ 5-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. Chicago is still fighting for a wild card spot.

The Phillies made the playoffs the last two seasons, but lost to Arizona in the 2023 NL Championship Series and to Houston in the 2022 World Series.
