Browns players anger fans by cheering Deshaun Watson’s injury

Cleveland Browns players were unhappy with fan reaction to Deshaun Watson’s likely ruptured Achilles tendon in Sunday’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

While Watson lay on the ground after the non-contact injury, fans could be heard cheering. That didn’t sit well with Myles Garrett, who told reporters the fan “should be ashamed of himself.”

“We don’t boo players who are injured on the field, especially when the car comes out,” the star pass rusher said. “We should be ashamed as Browns and as fans for booing and bringing anyone down. (Watson is) not perfect, he doesn’t have to be. None of us are expected to be perfect.”

“Humans do pretty much everything right. “He was a model citizen in both college and the pros,” Garrett added. “We can’t look down on the guy because of mistakes he made on the field or anything off the field. We have no moral reason to look down on the guy.”

Jameis Winston, the Browns’ emergency third quarterback, also expressed frustration with fans.

“I am very dismayed by the reaction to a man who has had the world against him for four years and who puts his body and his life on the line every day for this city.” said Winston. “Regardless of your perception, regardless of what you think should happen to him, he has committed himself every day to ensuring I am here to be the best he can be for this team.

Watson has been the subject of dozens of lawsuits from multiple women alleging sexual assault and harassment. He settled 23 of the 24 lawsuits. He served an 11-game suspension in 2022 and a year later the NFL updated its conduct policy.

A new complaint surfaced in September alleging the quarterback committed sexual assault and battery in 2020.
