“Bruins make quick roster moves after signing Jeremy Swayman”

Don Sweeney admitted there were “really difficult” roster decisions ahead after the Bruins signed Jeremy Swayman to an expensive long-term contract.

Boston is likely to make a number of transactions before its regular-season opener Tuesday night at Florida. But two were completed immediately after Swayman’s new deal.

Brandon Bussi and Jiri Patera were placed on waivers by the Bruins on Sunday, according to an announcement from the NHL. The two goalies, along with Billy Sweezey, Patrick Brown and Jeffrey Viel, were two of five players granted waivers by Boston after the preseason finale.

Bussi, who joined the Bruins on an entry-level contract in March 2022, was the starting goalie for Boston’s exhibition game against the Washington Capitals on Saturday. The 26-year-old, as long as he clears waivers, could still be the Bruins’ backup goaltender for their opening game against the Panthers on Tuesday. Joonas Korpisalo will be the starter, and Jim Montgomery and company may not prefer Swayman as No. 2 since he didn’t play in the preseason.

Patera’s tenure with the Bruins could last less than a week. Boston requested a waiver from the Vancouver Canucks for the 25-year-old on Wednesday while Swayman’s contract situation was still unclear. He has eight games of NHL experience, all played for the Vegas Golden Knights.
