The Boston Bruins are celebrating the 100th anniversary of their first NHL game with a new jersey.

The team unveiled a special commemorative jersey Thursday for its Dec. 1 game against the Montreal Canadiens. The B’s played their first game as a franchise on December 1, 1924 against the Montreal Maroons – which the Bruins won 2-1 at Northeastern Matthews Arena.

The jersey has a similar design to the one the team wore in the 1980s, with a few modifications.

“The jersey design is inspired by the 1980s, a pivotal era in Bruins history that embodies the team’s core values,” the Bruins wrote in a press release. “The uniform kit features dipped gold sleeves and socks with a modern take on traditional stripes and pays homage to the Bruins alumni who previously represented the Spoked-B.”

“Other details inside the jersey include a special design on the collar and bottom hem. The collar features the score of the club’s very first game at the Boston Arena on December 1, 1924 – Boston Bruins 2, Montreal Maroons 1.” Enshrined in the bottom hem are the team’s core values - tradition, courage, passion and heart – that of the club will continue to carry into the future.”

“The Centennial Game will be a special moment for our organization and especially for our fans, so the jersey design had to fit the occasion,” Bruins president Cam Neely said in a press release.

“There are so many elements that bring joy to both fans and players, but my favorite part of the jersey is the bottom hem; When our players pull this jersey over their heads, they will recognize our core values: tradition, courage, passion and heart. These are the values that we have embodied for a century and that we will carry with us for the next generation beginning December 1st.”

The Bruins have worn many different alternate jerseys in recent years, some designed for outdoor games such as the Winter Classic. It remains to be seen whether this new Centennial Game jersey will become a permanent part of the rotation.
