Buche Foods provides food to 28,000 children as part of the summer nutrition program

PINE RIDGE, SD (Dakota News Now) – In July, Buche Foods and Anna Halverson, Oglala Sioux representative on the Pass Creek Tribal Council, partnered to launch the Summer Food Program, which has fed 28,000 children across the nine districts of the Pine Ridge Reservation.

Twice a week, the program assembled and delivered 28,000 meals and snacks to remote areas in Pine Ridge, where food shortages are greatest during the summer.

Halverson approached GF Buche Company President RF Buche about the program and later took over leadership of the Buche Foods team.

“It’s been a very humbling but also very rewarding experience,” said RF Buche. “We couldn’t have done it without the help of Anna Halverson and so many others. Soon we’ll be serving breakfast and dinner to nearly 50,000 people a week. It’s been a really great program.”

“It was an honor to provide nutritious meals to children across Oglala Lakota County every week for the first time this summer,” said Halverson. “We really hit the ground running. It was a historic initiative that Oglala Sioux Tribe President Frank Star Comes Out, my colleagues George Dreamer, Donroy Ghost Bear and I worked so hard to make a reality.”

GF Beech Co. owns and operates 24 locations in 12 different communities in South Dakota, including grocery stores, auto parts stores and fast food restaurants.
