AULANDER – Both lanes of NC 11 north of the NC 305 intersection are currently closed to traffic due to an early afternoon (Monday) accident involving two commercial vehicles and one passenger car.

The accident occurred at or near the railroad crossing on NC 11. It is currently unknown whether anyone was injured.

Bertie Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said one of the commercial vehicles was a propane delivery truck that caught fire as a result of the accident.

“The highway will be closed for an extended period of time while emergency crews assess the consequences of the accident,” Ruffin told the News-Herald.

Thick black smoke filled the rain-soaked air as emergency responders cordoned off the area. Several local fire departments are on the scene, as well as the NC Highway Patrol, Bertie Sheriff’s Office, Bertie EMS and emergency management officials from Bertie and Hertford counties.

Traffic is currently being diverted via NC 11 Business through downtown Aulander.

The News-Herald will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
