Candice Bergen cheekily compares JD Vance and Dan Quayle at the Emmys

Emmy Awards host Candice Bergen mocked Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance by comparing him to former Republican Vice President Dan Quayle. (Watch the video below.)

Vance’s much-publicized dig at powerful Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris, in the form of “childless cat ladies” continued to provoke ridicule on the prestigious evening of the television show.

Bergen recalled the pivotal moment in 1992 when Quayle moralized on Bergen’s sitcom character Murphy Brown for not treating his parents right. (The CBS comedy about an investigative journalist originally ran from 1988 to 1998 and was revived for one season in 2018.)

“My character was attacked by Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy got pregnant and decided to raise the baby as a single mother,” Bergen said. “Oh, how far we’ve come.”

Quayle noted in a 1992 speech that her character “mocks the importance of fathers by giving birth to a child alone and calling it just another ‘lifestyle choice.'”

“Today, a Republican candidate for Vice President would never “Attacking a woman for having children,” Bergen snapped. “So, as they say, my work here is done. Meow.”
