Céline Dion condemns Trump campaign’s use of cult song with four-word question

Céline Dion condemns Trump campaign’s use of cult song with four-word question

Céline Dion’s management team has spoken out after the singer’s iconic song “My Heart Will Go On” was heard at a rally headlined by former President Donald Trump, according to video clips of the event posted online.

Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, spoke at a campaign rally in Montana on Friday. Videos posted on social media featured Dion’s song from the Oscar-winning 1997 film “Titanic” while a large screen showed a video of Dion seemingly performing the song on stage.

“Today, Céline Dion’s management team and her record label, Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc., became aware of the unauthorized use of the video, recording, musical performance and image of Céline Dion singing ‘My Heart Will Go On’ at a Donald Trump/JD Vance campaign rally in Montana,” said a statement shared on Dion’s official social media pages.

“This use is in no way authorized and Céline Dion does not endorse this or any similar use,” the statement said.

The management team then questioned the song selection itself and asked: “And really, THIS song?”

Neither Dions nor the Trump campaign immediately responded to requests for comment.

Trump headlined a campaign rally in Bozeman, Montana, to drum up support for Republican Senate candidate Tim Sheehy.

The theme song from “Titanic,” which won one of the film’s eleven Oscars in 1998, was apparently played at Trump’s campaign events in recent years, according to Deadline.

People on X (formerly Twitter) mocked Trump for the song choice after Friday’s rally, pointing out that James Cameron’s film is about a sinking ship – which some online saw as a metaphor for Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.

“Meanwhile, in the Trump campaign, they are literally playing the theme song from a movie about a sinking ship before a rally,” wrote David Hogg, a survivor of the Parkland High School shooting and founder of the gun control organization March for Our Lives.

“Glad I’m not the only one who realized that the song from a movie about a sinking ship might not be the best for Trump/Vance…” wrote another user.

There was also a visual glitch at Friday’s rally in Montana: People positioned behind Trump held up signs that were apparently directed against Trump himself.

The signs were intended to insult his Democratic rival in the presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris, with the text: “Liar Kamala, you’re fired!”, a reference to Trump’s catchphrase from his reality show “Apprentice.”

But the words “Lyin’ Kamala” were printed in a light color on a white background and were barely visible, while “You’re fired!” was printed much larger and in bold blue letters. The effect was that Trump was surrounded on stage by a sea of condemnation.
